It teaches us that we need to treat everyone equal and not discriminate others based on looks, beliefs, and background. It also teaches us that we need to fight for what we believe and that even when things are hard that there is a way to work together and find an even way to give both to each side. Without these compromises we would have had the Civil War a lot earlier and there wouldn't have been the encouragement to settle further west.
